San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel is in hospital due to pneumonia and fluid in his lungs.
On Sunday, the 49ers were dealt several cruel injury blows in the 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl LVIII rematch. Brandon Aiyuk suffered a season-ending torn ACL and MCL, while Samuel exited the loss early due to illness.
Samuel has since been hospitalized with fluid in his lungs as he suffers from pneumonia. The 28-year-old is currently in the hospital and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan stated he currently has no timetable to return.

Samuel did not make a catch and wasn’t targeted by quarterback Brock Purdy during the game at Levi’s Stadium. The receiver was also seen on the sidelines during that contest wearing an oxygen mask and returned to the field dressed in street clothes for the second half.
He was questionable leading up to the game with an illness, but specifics weren’t known. His uncertain future represents a hammer blow to the 49ers offense, which had already lost Aiyuk versus the Chiefs.
Aiyuk is set to undergo season-ending surgery after his knee bent awkwardly following a catch in the middle of the field, with the receiver going down. As McDuffie was bringing down Aiyuk, defensive back Chamarri Conner helped the cornerback to take down the 49ers star, and Conner appeared to hit Aiyuk’s right knee, causing it to buckle and the receiver to drop to the grass in serious pain.
After the collision, Aiyuk was spotted walking to the blue medical tent to be examined by the team’s medical staff to determine the severity of the injury. He was carted off just before halftime with two catches and 23 yards.

Along with the two wide receivers, star running back Christian McCaffrey has yet to play in a game this season. The reigning Offensive Player of the Year has been dealing with Achilles tendinitis as well as a calf issue.
Meanwhile, rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall made his debut on Sunday after missing the first six games of the season as he recovered from being shot in the chest. The 49ers offense is badly beaten up, and the absence of Samuel will be keenly felt.
Samuel has racked up 335 yards and one touchdown on 20 catches this season – his sixth campaign with the 49ers. The 3-4 49ers take on the 3-3 Dallas Cowboys in their next game on Sunday, Oct. 27.
